3 Types Of Incentive Websites – #2 Pure Traffic
Posted on 14. Oct, 2008 by $haz in General, Traffic Help
This is the 2nd installment of the “3 Types of Incentive Websites.” Before you read this post, read the first one so you have a grasp of what the other traffic types entail.
First part: 3 Types Of Incentive Websites – #1 Forum Traffic
To do a little recap, here are the 3 types:
Pure Traffic Websites
Both Forum and Pure Traffic Websites
This post will talk about pure traffic. I will slowly build on things incentive website owners should know about the industry and the traffic it gets.
Pure traffic websites are the types that get a majority of their traffic from users who have never heard of the incentive industry or have been taught how to complete it. These websites obtain the users who search randomly in Google for things like “Free iPod” or “Free Xbox.” Or they stumble upon the website from local advertisements, blog posts, those annoying “Get a Free iPod” pop ups, and most importantly, word of mouth. Being a pure traffic website is what every incentive company should hope to reach because it eliminates the threat of relying on a forum to traffic your websites.
Pure traffic websites have less hassle with users since users do not expect special attention and normally do not complain as much as the users from the forums. That might sound harsh, but ask any incentive website that receives a majority of their traffic from forums; those users can drive us insane. Even though some pure traffic users are the same way, a majority of them act that way from forum websites. Sometimes I feel like ripping their head off and telling them to “STFU.” I also sometimes feel like banning them for no reason, well actually because they ticked me off. I admit sometimes when they threaten me I go along with it just to see what they would really do, I have had “reporting to BBB” threats all the way to death threats, sometimes they can be fun! But of course, I don’t deal with those users as much anymore, thanks to my awesome support team who deals with them for me (insert Sarah Palin shout out excerpt along with a *wink* from the Vice Presidential Debate). With pure traffic, you have less of those types of users giving you a headache.
Right off the bat I’m going to tell you guys something that might upset you, but it’s better that I tell you all the truth than a lie, right? If you own an FSRevolution script website, your chances of getting pure traffic have already dropped immensely. FSRevolution is a very good incentive script, but it’s only good for forum traffic. As much as you want to deny that, deep down inside you know it’s true. I’ll explain more about this later as we cover ways to get pure traffic.
I love pure traffic. I love knowing that most my users are coming from Google, blogs, and all other places. There is no need to rely on a forum for a majority of your traffic. You can dictate the amount of traffic with the amount of work you put into gaining the traffic. It is hard work, very hard work, but in the end it pays off. I’ll explain how to get pure traffic later on (this is how I keep you wanting more and more of this blog, slick eh?).
These are the users that do not ask for “free greens” (basically means that the first user does not have to complete offer requirements, they can just start referring other users who complete them). They complete their offer requirements and go on to refer other users for their prize. This is how incentive websites were completed before the concept of “free greens.” They made more money because the users actually completed their campaign requirements before they went out referring other users. This is how incentive websites should be. This is one of the other opportunities you gain from having pure traffic users.
Another opportunity that you gain is the fact that you don’t need any promotions. The users are motivated enough by the prize they chose, they don’t need extra motivation to complete the process. This puts a lot of money back in your pocket. I have browsed the FreeLunchRoom and Anything4Free forums and have seen incentive websites giving away over $2,000 in promotions. Seriously..? You need to give away an additional $2,000+ just so users will complete your website. Is your website not amazing enough for your users to complete without a $2,000+ promotion? I pity those websites, because they might have high revenues, but any smart person knows that revenues do not dictate your profit. You will have high revenues that month, but your profit will not change drastically, or will decline. That’s the beauty of pure traffic. None of that high value promotion crap. Even if you need to run a promotion, it can be a small one that won’t hurt your pocket as much.
This is what a pure traffic incentive website is. If you are a pure website, please comment on how your experiences are and what other information you can provide. In a later post, I will talk about both the pure traffic websites and the forum traffic websites. I believe that if an incentive website wants to know how to gain more traffic, they will need to understand the category they fit in, as well as the other categories. Once the categories have been discussed, we can move on to the way to obtain more traffic.

I can definitely see how that is, I just wish I could get pure traffic. Actually, I just wish I knew how I could get any traffic, I just don’t see PPC being effective or directory submission, etc. The only way I can see my website getting traffic is from forums, giving out a free credit or something, then from there have them do all the work by getting referrals.
Also, Palin is fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine

so……google adwords, a good thing? Also, can you give some examples of good “how-to” pages. I feel like if a user ’stumbles’ upon your site they should stumble upon the how to page
Yes, I have FSR, but that shouldn’t eliminate me from pure traffic

There are many other ways to get pure traffic. Some methods would be make money blogs. These people are usually newbies and what they’ll do is check out the advertisements in hopes of finding something resourceful.
But here is a small list I’ve came up with, some you may have heard of, some you might not of:
1. PPC Marketing
2. Remote Advertising (Advertising on other websites)
3. Blog Review (Have people write a review about your site)
4. Press Releases (Great for if you have something unique on your site)
5. Blog Comments (Like this one, although I’m not promoting an incentive site)
6. Small Biz Ads (Craigslist)
7. Business Cards (Take it offline and promote a bit)
8. Be Creative (I left this one as “be creative” cause who knows, you may come up with a very unique method you never thought of.)
Good luck

Good points Young Money,
My advice would be to be very very careful with PPC marketing. PPC ads that say something like “Fee ipod, click here”, these have a very bad rep. I really doubt that the Return on Investment will be profitable.
But then again, if executed tastefully and professionally, PPC has huge potential.
The same goes for high profile advertising ads, newspapers, ads, etc. These are all very expensive. But in retrospect they get the most exposure.
The first thing anyone has to do is identify their target market. What general profile do you want your customers to have? Young Adults between 18 – 22 in university, stay at home mom’s?
Identify your target market, then find places were your target market socializes, operates and goes to when they’re online. Find those websites and partner with them; that includes advertising on their site or simply emailing the owner of the site.

now why do you say using a generic script kills pure traffic? i’m not doubting it, i just can’t come up with the reason myself.

I see, how do you recommend going about finding the right person to create a custom script for a site if your not planning on doing it yourself ? since the results of that work can have such a big effect on your success.

There are many websites out there which allow you to find someone to code it for you. Such places like http://www.getafreelancer.com, http://www.scriptlance.com, etc.

I would disagree about your point about FSRevolution scripts and not being able to get pure traffic.
I think that as long as your website is clear in terms of how the system works, making it clear that it’s legitimate, and that prizes can easily be won is all that you need. (I’m working on this for my site now) . Many sites don’t have this but it’s essential if you want pure traffic. You must explain how the process works clearly.
Once you have real “floodgates” opened, and have somewhat targeted traffic coming to you, FSRevolution will work as well as any other site.
Perhaps I misunderstood – can you clarify as to what exactly you meant as to why fsrevolution wouldn’t work?

It’s very clogged inside and hard to customize. If you do try to customize anything with FSR, it gets even more cluttered and just looks like a mess.
A user should not have to look for outside help or click on a different link for them to know how to complete the website and get their free prize. FSR is a good script, it’s just not made for users who have no clue about freebie forums or trading.
That’s just my opinion though.

Shaz, perhaps you can give us some specific tips on how to build up traffic to our sites.
I know at least I’d appreciate it and I’m sure there are other readers who would also

Yeah I will do that, you can keep track with the Traffic link up top. I update that link when I post something new about traffic.

In order to get organic traffic from a FSR powered site, you need to set it up like any website. Targeting keywords like free stuff, free ipods, free cash etc. will get you nowhere. You have to target keywords with lower competition like free yugioh cards, free printer ink etc. with a healthy search volume and less than 50 000 competing pages. I have my site ranked quite highly in Google for some keywords. What also helps is a custom designed blog on your rootdomain, that way you can drive good traffic to your site with all the WP plugins available. Organic traffic is very possible using the FSR script if done correctly. imo
