Twitter Drives Traffic

Twitter Drives Traffic

Ok so I’ll be straight up, I thought Twitter was the dumbest thing alive and on top of that it made no sense to me. From what I understood, Twitter is basically like a Facebook status updater. On Facebook you can see your friends statuses and it tells you what they are doing or thinking, so basically that’s my interpretation of Twitter and I thought there was no point of it since Facebook can already take care of that.

Man was I wrong. Twitter phenomona is growing rapidly and everywhere you look someone out here (famous or not) has a damn Twitter account. I watch the NBA Playoffs and TNT is telling viewers to go follow their Twitter account for updates and prizes.  I watch CNN for news updates and they even have their own Twitter. Even NBA players are sitting there updating their Twitters after each game they play, and not like hours after the game, RIGHT AFTER the game is over they update it. Hell, I think even Obama has a Twitter!

It seemed like everyone in the world had a Twitter and I was the only loser who wasn’t Tweeting. So before the relaunch of Bonus Network, my partner and I were discussing some new marketing strategy and he  thought we should start up a up Twitter account for Bonus Network. I means why not? Everyone and their mom’s is doing it and the big companies and celebrities have over 10,000 followers. So with me and my ego, I think Bonus Network can get 100,000 followers if these other companies can get 10,000.

You are probably now wondering how Twitter can help with traffic. Well after my daily routine of visiting blogs and websites for the current up to date news, I stumbled upon Shoemoney’s blog post explaining how Twitter is his 2nd biggest source of traffic. That is a huge deal! 2nd biggest source of Shoemoney’s traffic comes from Twitter!

If your wondering how Twitter can get a person that much traffic I can tell you right now that I have no right answer. You can read this About.com article on Twitter traffic to get the technical answer, or you can just try to understand me explain it.

I believe that Twitter gives you crazy viral traffic, which basically means word of mouth traffic. The more followers you have, the more likely they will mention your twitter to a friend of theirs, who in turn will mention to their friend, etc.

I’ll give you a real life example of what I mean. Just last night me and a bunch of my friends were watching Game 4 of the Orlando Magic vs Cleveland Cavs semi final series. Around halftime one of my friends checked his phone messages and got an alert from Twitter saying that Shaq (Shaquille Oneal) played basketball with Lil Bow Wow (the rapper) today. So after he read that he decided to tell us and we asked him how he found out about that, and he said he follows Shaq’s Twitter.

Simple as that. My one friend got Shaq’s Twitter message to about 9 of us. That is the easiest way to get traffic. We then went on making fun of him by asking him if Shaq follows his Twitter, but sadly he said that he doesn’t.

Basically, Twitter = Viral Traffic. And since then I have my own personal Twitter account (you can find out what I’m up to) and also a Bonus Network Twitter (you can check out Bonus Network updates) account which I hope you will follow both because I live the most amazing and interesting life and Bonus Network is just plain awesome!

Now my life is complete because I can finally tweet tweet!

I remember the first email I got from a friend after he got his laptop with wireless. He was gushing over how wonderful it was, because he could write email anywhere and send it immediately. He’s a reporter, so that was a big deal for him. Then he said, “In fact, I’m sitting on the toilet outside the press room right now.” Sometimes, having immediate access to what other people are doing isn’t such a good thing.
